What the N8 tells us about the N9…

The N900 was released with some specs that some (including myself) were slightly disappointed with. The US mobile device market is filled with people who constantly have only complaints about the carrier (provider) their particular device is locked to. The N900, while being unlocked is still limited to T-Mobile for 3G (W-CDMA/UMTS) coverage.

The immortal words “I want to be a truck driver” are words that should never be said out loud. Why? because in theory, being a truck driver sounds fun and exciting. In reality most people can’t do it, and have no idea what they were getting into, and ultimately end up hating it. Ultimate Mobility: Entertainment

Part 4: Being constantly mobile occasionally calls for down time, sleeping is only part of it. The rules of trucking used to be that you’d drive for 10 hours, sleep for eight. It’s now drive for 11 hours followed by 10 hours off duty. So given that I’m obviously not going to be sleeping a full 10 hours after being awake for only 11 hours, I’m going to have some extra time on my hands. How does that time get filled? Steve Jobs – Web Standards? I don’t care.

As we move forward on the web, standards change, HTML itself changes. The latest change to HTML5 has been hotly debated in tech circles, and video is now being incorporated into the HTML standard. Apple suggests the video codec to be used should be H.264, the open source community suggested we should use OGG Theora, Google decided they want to use a new codec VP8 and open source it. Outside of the tech elite corporations, people in the tech community are confused. Some people want Google to succeed, others want Apple, others want to use OGG/Theora. Continue reading »

MeeGo vs Android

There are many reasons why I think the Maemo & MeeGo OSes are better than Google’s Android. I know some people may disagree, however the Android OS is application based, whereas the MeeGo OS is a handheld computer OS. Developers have realized this too, and while Android’s Java based applcations are easy to build for beginners, Maemo & MeeGo’s development environments allow for much richer applications.
